.. in April of this year the Southern Boating Magazine picked Sampson Cay for their Annual Swimsuit Issue Photo Shoot and what a good choice they made .. this area is a ‘smorgasbord’ for a photographer .. .. GREAT NEWS – we called Dan and Marjorie on our Cell Phone ( not a real good connection ) and found out that they will be joining the Fly-In Crew on the 20th .. so they will be joining us on Dee Light from Staniel Cay for the duration of the trip .. .. today started with overcast Skies and again another WINDY day .. NOT a good day to be out on the water or for snorkeling in the local area .. soooo Betty, Lindsey and Dianne went for a long walk around the Island .. both in and out of the water .. later Betty got a Golf Cart and she toured the Island by land with Sue, Debbie and Patty .. the had a good tour of the Island and quickly found that all the ‘local’ roads lead right to the Sampson Cay BAR .. where they enjoyed many ‘Tropical Dee Light’s’ .. Guy and Marv looked ahead at our up coming weather .. it looks like it will be real WINDY all this week and right into next week .. and we do not want to cross over to Cat Island with high and very rough Seas .. some of the Marinas even ask all the Boaters to leave when it becomes too windy for their Docks .. soooo Marv check out some alternates ahead .. Plan A - after checking at Staniel they will let us stay right there if we want to extend our stay there .. Plan B – try to get into Cave Cay .. Marv got Steve’s PC and Bonnie’s Apple both up and running .. Marv also discovered ( thanks to Patty ) that the Gift Shop has Dairymaid Ice Cream in many flavors !! .. the Crew on KYKNOS ( Bonnie, Bob and Ricky ) put together a Sea Creatures Dock Party’ and 'Hors d’oeuvre Party' .. the Party started out on the Dock but when the rains came we migrated to an open Shelter .. well the rains picked up and so did the WINDS so we picked up and we moved again to the bar .. the Sea Creatures Dock Party became the Sea Creatures ‘Bar’ Party .. the multi-Bean Soup was GREAT .. Bonnie is as good in the Galley as she is at the Helm .. with all the ‘rain’ the ‘Frog Hat’ multiplied quickly .. Travel – Today 0 Miles – Cumulative - Dee Light 581 Miles – Dinghy 53 Miles |

.. Sampson Cay’s Marina Sampson Cay lies 240 miles from Ft. Lauderdale .. 67 nautical miles Southeast of Nassau .. the Marina has recently upgraded .. and the Entrance to the Marina has been dredged .. the Cut to the Marina has been widened and dredged with 7 feet of water at low tide and 8 feet in the Marina with 9 feet of water at the Fuel Docks in the front .. the Marina has long been a favored ‘Hurricane Hole’ and is protected on all sides by land .. Boaters - In the heart of what has been called the "most beautiful cruising waters in the world", Sampson Cay lies directly northwest of Staniel Cay and just to the southeast of the Exuma National Land and Sea Park .. Sampson Cay is among the safest anchorages in the Exumas and a natural hurricane hole .. last night when our Sea Creatures Dock Party was over some of Bonnie’s finest china ended up in the water between the Dock and KYKNOS .. UGH !! .. sooo this mornings ‘Dock’ entertainment was watching Guy retrieve Bonnie’s china .. the Crew on Dee Light spent the morning cleaning out the Garbage Disposals Sewer Line .. UFFDA .. and we ended up blowing a High Pressure Line off the Water Maker .. UGH !! .. about noon everyone except Dee Light headed out with their Tenders out to check out the area .. they ended up going to the Caves .. later we fueled up our Tender and took it out for a little tour of the area before we hoisted it back up on Dee Light .. |

.. well here we go again .. and Hurricane Season is not suppose to start until August .. ?? .. .. some time ago we had made arrangements for all of us to have dinner at the Samson Cay Club and Marina .. last night during the ‘rain’ we made our dinner selections so the Club was all set for us when we showed up for dinner .. and was it GREAT !!! .. the winds went down a little so we enjoyed sharing a few stories on MS DIANNE’s Cockpit before we headed in for the night .. .. this morning in the first time that the winds are down a little .. like a ‘lull’ before something .. at 08:00 am every day a LADY reports the weather on Channel 14 .. her organization is called Blue Yonder .. she did not paint a very pretty weather picture at all this morning .. last night Marv talked with Wilson the Manager at the Sampson Cay Club about the weather heading our way .. the Sampson Cay Club and Marina is one of the best Marinas to spell out high winds in the area .. soooo today Marv met with Wilson again to discuss a Adrian Plan B .. the Marina here is not filled for the Weekend so we will get back to him when we formulate our Game Plan .. .. shopping is always an adventure .. when we were at Sampson Betty checked out a few of the prices in the local / Marina Shop .. Bread $4.25 .. Tomato’s $1.75 per pound .. small can of Peas $1.70 .. fresh Pineapple $9.00 .. Eggs $2.75 .. small Orange Juice $7.00 .. very small Cheese $5.60 .. Frosted Flakes $6.25 .. small jar of Salsa $6.20 .. small can of Cranberry Juice $4.85 .. UFFFFDA !! .. Betty returned empty handed muttering, “we will eat what we have”. .. at 10:15 am MS DIANNE pulled out of the Marina .. it is only a five mile distance so we staggered our departure / arrival .. with the WINDS and LOW Tide getting to the Docks and docking at Staniel was tricky at best but by noon all five Boats were all tied off at the Marina once again .. we had lunch with Bob and Sue ( FENDER BENDER ) at the Yacht Club .. the Bar / Restaurant does stretch the term Yacht Club by American standards .. but this is the Bahamas !! .. and it is great here .. when we got here their electrical power was down but by mid afternoon it was back up and running again .. for dinner Rick prepared some of the fish that Steve and Bob caught when we were at the Sampson Cay Club .. as we were getting organized the rains came again just like the other night when we tried to have a Dock Party .. we first moved to the Bar / Yacht Club but later moved to MS DIANNE .. it turned out to be another great evening .. .. the Staniel Yacht Club has been an established part of the Staniel Cay community since 1956 .. today there are 9 charming Cottages .. an 18 Slip Marina .. a 3,000 foot Airstrip and a Clubhouse with a wonderful Restaurant and casual Island Bar .. ( named as one of Jimmy Buffet’s “10 Greatest Places for a Waterside Drink” ) .. we have been told to be sure to have dinner at the Fowl Cay Resort .. it is easy to get there by water from either Sampson or Staniel .. see www.fowlcay.com .. after getting our Tenders back in the water we all headed out for Thunderball Grotto .. there is an underwater Cave that was featured in 2 James Bond movies .. .. after taking a GOOD long look at the weather we decided to stay right here thru Saturday night and look at alternating our plans after that .. about 10:00 am we took our Tenders to Caves on Rock Dungas Cay to see Stalagmite and Stalactite formations .. once in the water we had to swim into the Caves .. where we saw the Exuma Wall .. it is a 75 foot vertical underwater wall that leads up to two openings 75 feet straight up .. from there we took the Dinghys to see the Wild Swimming Pigs on Big Major Cay .. we had saved up our ‘garbage’ to feed them .. and they were not shy at all .. they saw us coming and came right out in the water to our Tenders .. they especially liked Lindsey .. then we all took the Tenders to Fowl Cay where we placed our dinner orders for tonight from the Tenders .. when we got back to the Marina we rented a Golf Cart and toured the entire Island .. there is MUCH to see !! .. we ended up in the ‘Downtown’ area where Betty had placed an order for bread at the ‘Pink Pearl Grocery Store’ .. we picked up the bread and a few other fresh food items .. our timing was just great as once a week the ‘Mail Cargo Ship’ makes it to the Island with fresh supplies and today was the day .. when we got back Marv worked on the Water Maker .. UGH !! .. at 6:15 the Fowl Cay Transport picked all 14 of us up and brought us by water to the Fowl Cay Restaurant .. |

|
.. the name Fowl Cay traces back over 100 years when the Cay was used to raise Chickens in this part of the Bahamas providing food to the local population .. Fowl Cay is a 50-acre island owned entirely by one couple who live much of the year on the island .. the Cay generates its own electricity and makes its own excellent water from the sea .. just to mention a few of the primary infrastructure items that make it self-sustaining with the exception of food .. .. when we made it to Fowl Cay we walked up the pathway to the Restaurant and made our way to the Bar where we were joined by other quests that were at the Island .. we had a great ‘birthday’ dinner at Fowl Cay .. a week ago it was Dianne’s birthday and Dianne wore the ‘Flamingo’ hat that Betty gave her all night .. some how the Flamingo hat made its way to Fowl Cay and ended up on Betty’s head .. after having a great time on the Island we returned to the Marina by water in a very light rain .. but it did not dampen the spirits of anyone as they were quick to continue the party at the Yacht Club’s Bar where Patty learned ‘Boom Boom’ .. .. at 08:00 we listened to the local weather report on the VHF .. it looks like we will be able to stay right here until Sunday and by Sunday the Seas to Davis should be OK .. ?? .. and it looks like Adrian will not be a factor for our travels .. we tried to get our needed parts for our `Water Maker’ all morning but never made it to ‘First Base’ at all .. about 01:00 pm the Fly-In Crew arrived at the Marina .. they made it from Page Field to Nassau in just over an hour .. they went thru Customs there and then on to Staniel .. Dan and Margie were READY to get on Dee Light and enjoy the balance of our trip .. they had a quick lunch at the ‘Yacht Club’ with all the Fly-In Crew and then started to relax .. later after ‘docktails’ on the Dock all 22 of us had dinner at the Yacht Club .. Jack Brady said that ‘he was finer than Frogs hair’ .. on May 20th 2003 the Royal Palm Yacht Club had dinner at the same place .. and at that time they dated a Burgee and stapled it to the rafters of the Yacht Club soooo we added 2005 to the same Burgee .. .. at 08:00 am we listened to Blue Yonder’s weather report on the VHF .. over breakfast on the Back Deck Marv went thru his mail that Jack brought yesterday .. we decided to cancel out our Plan B reservations at Sampson as the Tropical Depression appears to be going well South of us .. Marv set up our Internet café on our Back Deck for any of the other boaters .. after spending the morning exploring the Island by foot we had a quick lunch and took our Tenders out .. we went back to Fowl Cay, the Caves and the Pigs again .. once back to the Marina our afternoon entiretainment was helping Steve ( BENEDICTION ) with his Septic Engineering challenge .. before our trip Steve had a local Fort Myers mechanic install a Waste Removal System as there are many Marinas in this area that do not have Septic Removal Systems ( ie Pump Out Systems ) .. for part of the afternoon Steve had three Engineers working on his new system .. they did get ‘foggy’ waters to appear under BENEDICTION and that put smiles on Debbie and Patty’s faces .. anyway later we had Cocktails and Hors d’oeuvre on the Front Porch of Jack and Pam’s Cottage .. the Fly-In Crew hosted a Mexican Fiesta Party for all of us .. and what a party it was .. after watching the sunset we all went back to the Yacht Club for a Local Lobster Dinner .. during dinner we met a couple from Milwaukee Wisconsin that were on their honeymoon .. they has spotted the Eau Claire WI on the Transom of Dee Light and he put on his Liney’s shirt in hopes that he would meet the Crew from Dee Light and he was successful .. . we checked out of the Marina last night .. this morning we will be heading to the Davis Harbour Marina that lies midway between Powell Point and Eleuthera Point on the Island of Eleuthera about 48 miles Northeast of Staniel .. we have a tricky narrow passage way to get thru so we plan to head out early .. the winds went down over night and the early morning was just beautiful on the water .. Bonnie got her Crew up and KYKNOS pulled out of the Marina just after 07:30 am .. and we followed with BENEDICTION a little after 08:00 am .. FENDER BENDER’s Air Conditioner died over night so they are going to head out for Nassau today to get it fixed and plan to join up with us in Spanish Wells .. once out in the open waters we were able to set our Auto Pilot for the Marker at Davis and enjoy our crossing .. we talked to KYKNO on the VHF when we went past them .. the waters were deep ( over 6,000 feet ) and a deep blue in color .. we saw a large Cruise Ship at anchor near an Island .. they were bringing their quests to shore by Tenders that were painted a bright orange color .. on the Island they had small shelters set up for their quests .. after a day on the Beach they will head out for their next stop .. as we approached the Davis Harbour Marina we were approaching the Marina from the Southwest .. our course took us to a small ‘privately maintained orange Buoy’ with a Radar Reflector called the Davis Harbour Waypoint – N24 43.83’ .. W076 15.10’ .. when we headed towards the Davis Harbour Marina Basin we headed 075 deg m for 0.8 nm and stayed between the Pole Markers designating the ‘Dredged Channel’ to the Basin .. a Sandbar shallows the Entrance of the Channel to 4 feet ( MLW ) .. but as you approach the Shore the depths increase until you reach the Basin with 12 feet ( MLW ) .. we had Dee Light tied off at the Davis Marina and hooked up by 10:00 am .. BENEDICTION joined us at the marina about an hour later .. we quickly hooked up to Shore Water as the cost for water here is only $12.00 per day .. it the last number of spots it has been 40 to 50 cents per gallon .. Betty started laundry and Margie put together ‘Lobster Wraps’ using the Lobster that we had left over from last night .. MS DIANNE and KYKNO both made it to the Marina about noon .. NOTE – there has been WI-FI Internet Service at most all of the Marinas that we have been at but here at Davis there is not any form of Internet Service at all .. the Davis Harbour Marina lies midway between Powell Point and Eleuthera Point .. at the Southern end of Eleuthera Island .. it is much like a ‘Gravel Pit’ that was carved out on the Shore Line .. there are 40 Slips .. there is Dockside water, electricity, fuel, laundry and showers .. they do not have a Restaurant near the Marina .. some repairs can be arranged to be done here .. there is little else around it and it is a long way from anywhere .. Rock Sound is the nearest place for provisioning, hardware, LPG, etc .. .. this well-maintained Marina is protected from all winds and surge .. the amenities are listed as ‘none’ .. .. when we got settled in we hired two local kids to clean Dee Light .. they had their own supplies ( except sodas ) and they did a great job .. we also continued our work on BENEDICTION’s Sewer and with a hand pump from Dee Light along with some Nashua Duct Tape, Patty’s bright red Twisters Licorice Candy we were able to develop an alternate system .. and it worked just great .. later Marv found a new Jabco unit that hopefully will be installed in the morning .. Marv also found a section of High Pressure Hose and the Connections for the Hose .. lets now hope that this will work on the Water Maker .. when we were walking the Docks we met a number of Boaters from the Fort Myers area .. this is a ‘Fishing Marina’ and they all had Sport Fishing Boats .. and we heard that there will be a large Fishing Tournament here in a couple of weeks .. the Gals took a long walk and sure enough the found the Beach that was loaded with many treasures .. Marv did a little ‘Dock Trolling’ and returned to Dee Light with a number of pounds of Fresh Fish all cleaned and ready for the Grill .. later Margie prepared an elegant candlelight dinner that we all enjoyed on the Back Deck .. it was most delightful .. Marv and Dan polished off our dinner with a large bowl of Bahamas Ice Cream .. Travel – Today 48 Miles – Cumulative - Dee Light 638 Miles – Tender 76 Miles |

.. last night we talked with Bonnie and Bob ( KYKNO ) .. they decided to head out this morning for Spanish Wells .. it is too far for them to make it in one day so they plan to make it part of the way today and will meet up with us when we get there on Tuesday .. they were out of the Marina at first light .. without any form of Internet Service the ‘locals’ depend on getting their weather information from Highborne Cay .. Highborne announces the weather over the VHF at 07:30 am .. there is not much at this Marina at all but it is a ‘local Fishing Center’ .. Dan and Steve talked with the Harbour Master and he set them up with a local Fishing Captain .. after Betty packed a lunch for them they headed out about to do some fishing .. with the parts that we found yesterday Marv got the Water Maker up and running again .. but not at full capacity .. now we can make 16 gallons per hour instead of 25 gallons per hour .. we tried to contact FENDER BENDER by phone a number of times but we were unable to contact them .. the Fishing Boat that Steve and Dan lined up yesterday would not run this morning so they spent much time doing ‘Land Trolling’ under a shade tree .. Lindsey lined up two Cars for the day soooo at 11:00 am we headed out to explore the Island .. the Island is long and very narrow with a single road that extends from Lighthouse Point to the South and the Spanish Wells area to the North .. we headed North to Rock Island and then we shopped our way to Tarpum Bay where we ended up having lunch at Sheila’s New Royal Castle Restaurant .. when we returned we found that Steve’s Mechanic had not progressed much at all on BENEDICTION’s problem .. UGH !! .. when the Fishing Boats returned to the Marina we found that some of them were not very successful at all and others did OK .. Dan thought that it must be that there will be a Full Moon tonight .. and when there is a Full Moon the fish just do not ‘bite’ at all .. Margie and Betty prepared the fish that Marv got when he was ‘trolling’ the Docks yesterday .. the Crew from BENEDICTION joined us for a fantastic fish dinner aboard Dee Light .. we polished off dinner with a Multi Berry Pie that Betty put together .. after dinner we had a short Skippers Meeting and Guy described our Course ahead for tomorrow .. it will not be an easy day as we will be traveling thru much ‘skinny’ waters and very narrow ‘Cuts’ with strong Tide Currents .. after our meeting we filled our Water Tanks and got everything ready to head out in the morning .. .. the Davis Harbour Marina is a Haven for the Sport Fishing Boaters and is a good stop over spot for Boaters traveling thru the area but does not have much more to offer .. we were up early and when the Harbour Master showed up ( 07:00 am ) we got checked out of the Marina .. at 07:30 am we listened to the weather from the Marina at Highborne .. all three of us ( MS DIANNE, BENEDICTION and DEE LIGHT ) headed out of the Marina right behind BENEDICTION about 07:45 am .. we headed into 3 to 5 footers for the first segment of our trip but once we were in the shallow waters we had 2 to 4 footers .. with the winds it was just enough to cover Dee Light with SALT once more .. the waters were very shallow all day .. MS DIANNE passed by us about 09:00 am and shortly after that we had a good thunder shower .. asoooo Dee Light had some of the SALT cleaned off her for a short time .. a short time later we slipped past BENEDICTION .. we passed thru MUCH SHALLOW WATERS .. there are things on the Charts like ‘Rocks and Coral’ .. ‘Grass and Rocks’ .. ‘Sand’ .. ‘Coral Reef’ .. ‘Rock Awash’ etc .. UFFFDA .. but we followed the Route that we set up last night and all went as planned .. about at a two-thirds point we had to go between two Rock Islands thru an area called ‘Current Cut’ .. we had real ‘skinny’ section to pass thru as we were headed towards the Cut and once we made it to the Cut we had a very strong current to deal with .. Betty stood post on the Bow thru this area and once thru the Cut she got a good Salt Water bath .. right after we made it thru the Current Cut we heard from FENDER BENDER .. they did get their Air Conditioner fixed ( $400.00 later ) and were headed to the Cut right behind us .. then we heard from MS DIANNE that they were at the Marina and so was KYKNOS .. the KYKNOS Crew was able to make good time yesterday and were at the Marina by 03:30 pm yesterday .. we were tied off at the Yacht Club ( HA ) by 12:30 pm .. BENEDTION and FENDER BENDER made it to the Marina shortly after we did .. it sure was great to have a FIVE of the Boats back together again !! .. lunch was great .. Margie’s homemade Split Pea Soup went real well with the last of our Ice Cream .. after lunch Margie and Betty headed into Town to find more Ice Cream ( came back with none ) and to explore the Island and they found a beautiful white sand Beach on the North side of the Island .. Dan hosed the salt off Dee Light .. Guy ( MS DIANNE ) took care of lining up a Pilot ( A-1 Broadshad ) for tomorrow .. the Pilot will lead us thru The 'Devils Backbone' route to Harbour Island .. the costs will be $50.00 per Boat and he will lead all of us out at 10:00 am .. later A-1 came by the Docks with fresh loves of Aunt Jo’s Bread for all of us .. his wife had baked the Bread this morning .. .. the Harbour Area is formed by a long ‘East – West’ Channel bounded by two small Islands and is well sheltered, although open to winds funneling from the East .. they have 40 slips .. the depth at high Tide is 10 foot and at low Tide is 8.5 foot .. they have Satellite TV service to each Slip .. they have a Laundromat , Restaurant / Cocktail bar, Electricity (220 & 110), water/ice, showers, telephone, bike hire, book exchange, etc .. CURRENT DAMAGE REPORT – Dee LIGHT’s Water Maker is now working .. MS DIANNE’s Alternator in not working .. FENDER BENDER’s Air Conditioner is now operating .. BENEDICTION’s Heads are still filled .. and KYKNOS’s Head is out of order .. .. Steve and Marv walked to the Spanish Wells Marine & Hardware and R & B Boatyard where we found parts for Steve’s Discharge System .. Patty and Debbie came along and they enjoyed shopping in the Marine Shops also .. we saw the Boat FAT LADY at one of the Docks .. the last time that we saw this Boat was back at Staniel Cay .. at 06:00 pm MS DIANNE hosted a ‘Painkiller Docktails Party’ with great Hors d’oeuvres .. then we all watched the DVD ‘Meet the Fockers’ ..
