Legislative Alert
S. 2766, the Clean Boating Act of 2008
The Threat to Recreational Boating. Unless Congress acts soon, every recreational boater in the country will have to obtain a federal or state permit in order to operate their boat. This means yearly fees, bureaucratic red tape, confusing and potentially state-by-state regulations, citizen suits and $32,000 per day penalties for non-compliance. These permits would apply to deck run-off, bilge water, engine cooling water and any other water-based, operational discharge from a recreational boat. The Environmental Protection Agency, due to a sweeping court order, is already writing this unprecedented new regulation on boaters.

Recreational boating is one of the most enjoyable American pastimes for 73 million boaters nationwide to spend time together outside enjoying our natural treasures with friends and family.  But, unless Congressional action is taken soon to pass S. 2766, the Clean Boating Act of 2008, the estimated 18 million recreational boats in this country could be subjected to sweeping new regulations and permit requirements intended for commercial ships with ballast water tanks, preventing boaters from enjoying this great past time.
Sen. Bill Nelson (D) speaks to more than  30 boaters in Fort Myers

Sen. Bill Nelson (D) spoke to more than 30 boaters this morning about efforts to stop legislation requiring pollutant discharge permits for recreational boaters.
Nelson held a press conference on the fuel dock at Fort Myers Municipal Marina at 9:30 a.m. to assure local boaters that he understands their concerns.

“Because of (Florida) being heaven,” he laughed, “all the recreational boaters are here.”
Nelson said there are 34 bipartisan co-sponsors in the Senate pushing a Clean Boating Act, which would clarify that laws regulating water discharges from large commercial boats does not apply to small recreational boaters.

A U.S. District Court ordered the Environmental Protection Agency in 2005 to create a new permitting system by September 2008, that would require all boaters, commercial and recreational, anglers and charter boats, to obtain pollutant discharge permits, now only required for large commercial or ocean-going ships.
2008-05-11 - Update on Alred Marina - From SYNERGY
Alred Marina is located 25 miles south of Huntsville, Al on the Tennessee
River and is within a short day drive of Chattanooga, Nashville and Memphis.
It located at MM 357 on the river which is about 140 miles east from the
junction of the TENTOM and the Tennessee. The website with all the
information is www.alredmarina.com and has all the information needed for
boaters to inquire about a slip from the manager Russ Cranford.

This is an excellent place for people that are looking to spent the summer
free of hurricanes and want to be well placed for a "LOOP DEPARTURE" in the
early Winter.
